I was particularly struck in the pictures in this production of Prospero and Miranda. The stills seem to feature a few moments of affection between Prospero and Miranda-one where she is kissing his cheek, another where she is hugging him-and another where Prospero looks on as Ferdinand and Miranda kiss. It makes me believe that the relationship between Prospero and Miranda was one focus in the production. I think that we may have discussed earlier in the class the incestuous undertones in the relationship. Definitely we see some intimacy between the two in these stills. Even the picture where Prospero witnesses the romance between his daughter and Ferdinand struck me as curious. His role as an onlooker in the picture is significant. At that moment, I would interpret it as either that he witnesses Miranda’s moments of intimacy in a wistful or jealous manner or that he stands as the construction behind their romance by conjuring it. The fact itself that he conjures it features him in command of his daughter’s sexuality (maybe even obsessed, one can say). The final picture (if the pictures are indeed chronologically ordered) has Miranda hugging Prospero, a possible farewell to her expression of affection to Prospero before going to marry a young man whom she will have a romance of propriety with.
